MEETING OF UNION LEADER REPRESENTATIVES FROM LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN AT ILO CALLED BY GERARDO MARTINEZ

A meeting of workers representatives from 76 Latin American and the Caribbean Organizations, called by the Members of the ILO´s Governing Body, Mr. Gerardo Martinez, Julio Roberto Esguerra, Hilda Anderson and J. De Benedetti, and by Victor Baez, representing the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA) was held on Friday 5 June, within the framework of the 98th International Labour Conference. Also, Valentín Pacho, representative for the World Federation of Trade Unions was in the panel.
During the opening speech, Gerardo Martinez highlighted the importance of gathering comrades and representatives of our region and talked about some activities and decisions made in the Governing Body.  Julio Roberto Esguerra, Hilda Anderson and Arnaldo Benedetti reported the activities developed as responsible representatives of Latin America workers.
Comrade Victor Baez referred to crisis and TUCA’s vision to tackle the challenge of crisis and its impact on the jobs. ACTRAV representatives: Carmen Benitez for Lima, Jesus García Gimenez for Turin and Hilda Sanchez, who was thanked by Gerardo Martinez due to her support during the ILO’s Governing Body meetings, for Geneva joined in over 80 comrades. Straight afterwards, delegates stressed on key issues such as the way Conference Commissions work and about crisis from national realities. Material elaborated by trade unions confederations was delivered as well as a TUCA document was spread by Iván González: “A TUCA reading on the recommendations proposed by the Stiglitz Commission.”
Delegates assured that crisis is due to the capitalist system and that the solutions offered are within the frame of the neoliberal model, for this reason, workers initiative must jointly tackle government and employers intentions who want the ILO to legitimize neoliberal policies.  It was explained that ILO’s approach must adopt strategies to overcome the crisis, based on policies for employment recovery and promoting and defending social security, from the basis that it can be a long-term crisis.
